Teaching in the Hybrid Classroom

Teaching in the Hybrid Classroom

Hybrid classrooms are based on the HyFlex methodology that allows for teaching three different audiences – students who come to the classroom, students who learn synchronously from home, and students who will watch the recording of the lesson asynchronously in Moodle. In these classrooms there is an elaborate recording system that includes: a camera (PTZ) that follows the instructor; an instructor computer to share presentations/ files / websites; and a system computer that controls the recording system. There is also a screen from which the instructor and students in the class can see and interact with the students participating from home.

The HyFlex teaching method is a based-on hybrid teaching and flexible learning. The method includes teaching in the classroom to three audiences: students who study in the classroom, students who learn from home synchronously, at the same time as the instructor teaches in the classroom, and students who will watch a recording of the lesson asynchronously in Moodle.

  • Prepare the asynchronous course assignments in Moodle before preparing the live classes.
    • Ensure that the assignments for the students who are not studying in real time will enable them to achieve the lesson goals.
    • Only after the asynchronous lesson is prepared, prepare for the synchronous section.
  • Treat students in the classroom and those outside the classroom (Zoom) equally.
  • Remember that the camera follows you, so while using the whiteboard:
    • After you’ve written something, stand on the side of the board to allow students participating in Zoom to see what you’ve written (as long as you don’t move, the camera will not move).
    • Write large and clear (remember that the camera picks up the entire board).
    • Use a dark whiteboard marker.
  • Use students or teaching assistants to help manage the lesson (answer questions in chat or when there is a question in Zoom).
  • Look at the camera – into the eyes of students in Zoom.
  • Repeat student questions/comments so that everyone can hear.
  • Conduct discussions in such a way that only one student speaks at a time to maintain the order and continuity of the lesson.
  • Use interactive tools like Socrative or Padlet.
On the Instructor Computer:
  1. Check sound by clicking on the “speaker” icon
  2. Turn on the projector (using the small remote). Check that the instructor computer is transmitting to the projector.
  3. Turn on the TV with the longer remote control. On this screen you can see the students at home.
  4. Start vMix
  5. Click on the “Zoom” link.
  6. Select the options you want.Check that the camera at the back of the classroom is broadcasting.
  7. Click on the “Moodle” link to open Moodle. You need to enter your SSO credentials.
  8. Enter the course
  9. Activate “Zoom” from the link in the Moodle course.
  10. At the end of the lesson, disconnect from Zoom and Moodle.
